The Building Has a Story and It’s Worth Knowing
410 South First Street spent most of the 20th century as a jewelry factory. Workers hand-polished rings inside these walls for decades. When we started demolition to begin the renovation, we found polishing dust still stained into the ceiling concrete where the walls used to stand. We left it. That’s not a design choice we made in a meeting with a decorator. That’s just what the building is.
During demolition we also found a time capsule sealed inside one of the walls. A White Castle cup. An anti-litter card. A newspaper from the day Apollo 13 splashed down in April 1970. Not a great day to be sealed in a wall, in retrospect, but we kept everything and the story lives in the property now. Some buildings just have something to say. This one has been talking since before we showed up.
The name of the basement speakeasy, the Neighborhood House, honors the Belknap Neighborhood House, a Louisville settlement house that served this part of the city for decades. The original building appears in historical photographs from the 1936 Louisville flood. We kept the name because the space is built on the same idea: a place where people come together. It’s a small detail that a lot of guests never ask about and then love when they find out.
Three Suite Tiers, Ten Suites, All Named After Triple Crown Winners
Every suite at A12 is named after a Triple Crown winner and designed around a different chapter of Louisville’s story. Gallery walls, custom murals, curated artwork on loan from a private collection in every room. These are not interchangeable hotel rooms with different numbers on the door. Crown Suites are the top tier. War Admiral and Secretariat. Three king bedrooms plus a queen-over-king bunk room, full kitchen, living room, and two baths. Each sleeps 10. The artwork in these suites is specifically chosen around the story of bourbon and beginnings for War Admiral, and race horses and jockeys for Secretariat. If you have a smaller group that wants the best of what the property has, these are the rooms.
Stakes Suites are the mid tier and where most groups spend their time. Six suites: Sir Barton, Count Fleet, American Pharoah, Whirlaway, Affirmed, and Seattle Slew. Two king bedrooms, two queen-over-king bunk rooms, full kitchen, living room, two baths. Each sleeps 12. Every one is built around a different Louisville story. Sir Barton is historic sports. Count Fleet is Vendome and still creation. American Pharoah is bourbon barrels and rickhouses. Seattle Slew is baseball and the Louisville Slugger. The level of detail in these rooms is not something you’d expect to find and then can’t stop noticing once you do.
Maiden Suites are on the basement level. Justify and Gallant Fox. Two queen-over-king bunk beds, small seating area, one bath. Each sleeps 8. They’re down the hall from the Neighborhood House Speakeasy, which for certain groups makes them the most desirable rooms in the building. You walk out your door and you’re already there.

The Neighborhood House Speakeasy Is Not a Hotel Bar
This is the piece that takes most guests a beat to fully understand when they first hear about it. The Neighborhood House Speakeasy is not a bar at the hotel that other guests share. It is a private basement-level lounge that belongs to your group exclusively for the duration of your stay. Nobody else has a key. Nobody else is walking through.
Pool table. Game room. Bar area with lounge seating. A chef’s kitchen set up for four-course dinners or a full omelet bar at breakfast depending on what you want. Outside on the ground level is the Paddock, an industrial urban courtyard with a custom-built shipping container bar at the center of it. About 2,500 square feet of outdoor gathering space. The right size for a cocktail hour before dinner, a bourbon tasting under the Louisville sky, or just a place for the group to spread out that isn’t a lobby or a hallway.
Louisville summers are real and the outdoor space works better in spring and fall, but the courtyard has good coverage and the bar setup makes it a natural anchor for any group activity that benefits from being outside. For wedding parties specifically, this is where the group photos happen. It has the right combination of industrial edge and genuine warmth that photographs well without looking like a set. 410 South First Street puts you 14 minutes on foot from Old Forester and Evan Williams on the Urban Bourbon Trail, 16 minutes from Michter’s Fort Nelson, 20 minutes from Angel’s Envy. Whiskey Row is a short walk. Fourth Street Live is 8 minutes. The Convention Center is 12 minutes. Muhammad Ali Center and the Louisville Slugger Museum are 18 minutes. Churchill Downs is 3.5 miles, which is not walkable but is a short rideshare.
Free on-site parking is included, which matters more than it sounds for a downtown Louisville property. Parking in this neighborhood runs 15 to 30 dollars per car per day at nearby garages. For a group of 20 people who drove, that’s a real number. At A12 it’s zero.
